Michael Jagger started Provident Security Corp “to pay for my college tuition back in 1996.” He hired friends to work with him, providing security at high school dances, and branched out into a bike patrol business. There he saw a need. “I was one of the guys out riding a bike and I kept seeing that alarms were going off and nothing was happening. We began to offer a five-minute response service in a small geographic area and that took off.” Today, Provident has 170 employees. It continues to offer the same five-minute response service, it installs and services residential alarms and has its own central station. Jagger says he looks to hire “lifeguards, other customer-service related people and we downplay the security element a bit.” With this kind of “early exposure to a quality operation,” people who might not consider security as a career can see the possibilities, he says. “Our goal,” he says of his future aspirations in the security industry, “is to build a brand … that will be held up as an example of an amazing service company across any industry.”
