Vancouver Police Auto Crime Prevention Kit

Last week, the Vancouver Police launched the "largest campaign in its history" to coincide with the years’ busiest theft from auto time… December.

The image above is a part of the PDF ‘Auto Crime Prevention Kit’ that you can download by clicking here.

They have also created a 30 second commercial clip that sends a pretty strong message: if you leave anything in your car, it will be stolen. Click here to watch the video.

I don’t think that I would ever actually place this sign in my car, for fear that someone would smash the window and take the sign just to be funny. However, in terms of getting the message across that anything left in your car is very likely to be gone by the time you return, I think it is a good campaign. Hopefully it works.

When I worked as a Special Constable with the RCMP in Surrey… I learned on my very first rotation that crooks are brazen enough to break into Police cars, if they think they can get away with it. Over a period of just six months, two Police cars were broken into and personal effects stolen. I also recall getting a call to pick up one of the bicycle team members who had his Police bike stolen while his back was turned. It only takes a couple seconds.

Of course, December is also the busiest burglary time during the year as well. I’ll have a post on that topic early next week.
