Telling crooks what they already know

I have received a few emails over the past ten months admonishing me for providing too much
information on this blog that could be used by a crook wanting to learn
a few new tricks. I have been criticized (mostly by people within the security industry) for ‘publicizing’ the fact that most burglar alarms rely on a telephone line… and that if that phone line is cut, the alarm cannot communicate. In the CBC story I was featured in last night, Miyoung Lee
(the reporter) mentioned that several locksmiths were not willing to go
on camera and felt that information about bump-keys should not be publicized.

The quick
answer to these issues is that the bad guys already know all of this
stuff. Bruce Scheiner talked about the value of full disclosure with respect to security threats on his blog the other day… and I completely agree.

The more that you know about both the real and potential threats,
the better equipped you will be to protect yourself against them.
