City's funding of security firms questioned

The owner of Provident Security stands to benefit from the city granting taxpayer dollars to business improvement associations for increased private security patrols. But Mike Jagger opposes the move.

"If there's money going out to other BIAs, Kerrisdale certainly deserves it," said Jagger, the president of Provident. "If given the choice, I would certainly recommend that we would want to have more police time."  Read More

The City Should Not Fund the Downtown Ambassador Program: Provident Security

Straight.com reprinted a post by Michael Jagger, where he talks about the Downtown Ambassador Program.

As a part of the City of Vancouver's Civil City Initiative, more than $800,000 has been (controversially) allocated for expansion of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Area (DVBIA) Downtown Ambassador program. Initially, the idea was to offer an incentive for other city BIA's (such as Gastown, Robson Street, Chinatown, Davie Village, etc.) to use the Downtown Ambassadors and for those BIA's to be eligible to receive city funding to 'top up' any BIA money spent on the program.  Read More

Security Sales & Integration: Security Industry Committing to a Greener Future

Security Industry Committing to a Greener Future

... "We do lots of little things, but in this business it is the little things that add up," says Mike Jagger, proprietor of Provident Security in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Provident also adheres to an extensive recycling program to dispose of transformers, batteries and other industrial refuse, along with common office materials. But Jagger is most proud of his company's "paperless office" initiative. With more than 200 employees and 4,500 customers, the full-service security provider until recently consumed huge amounts of paper. No more. The essential design of a paperless concept is that office automation renders paper redundant for everyday tasks such as record-keeping and bookkeeping.  Read More

Michael Jagger recognized as one of the Top 20 under 40

Michael Jagger started Provident Security Corp "to pay for my college tuition back in 1996." He hired friends to work with him, providing security at high school dances, and branched out into a bike patrol business. There he saw a need. "I was one of the guys out riding a bike and I kept seeing that alarms were going off and nothing was happening. We began to offer a five-minute response service in a small geographic area and that took off."  Read More
