in the event of a complete failure with a known cause (such as an earthquake) we could provide emergency responders with an override code at either the intercom or a keypad to unlock the doors. In the event of a real fire, the doors would unlock automatically anyways (which was another failure in the UBC story)... the process would take a little longer because we would have to call to the dispatch centre for whichever Police or Fire Department that required access in order to verify that they were legitimate. 

The quick answer is that we always have a local override code that we could provide in a true emergency.</description>
